After Care

It is important to be aware of the immediate post-treatment care steps to ensure optimal results and minimize potential side effects.

Congratulations on your Botox treatment! Neuromodulators work by temporarily relaxing facial muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox begins to take effect in 7-10 days and takes 2 weeks to hit its peak. Clinically it lasts 3-4 months.

*If additional units are needed, they will not be injected until the initial injections have hit their peak.

Immediately post treatment

  • Avoid touching or massaging the treated area for 48 hours.
  • Redness and bumps may persist for 15-30 minutes.
  • Bruising may occur and can last for approximately a week.
  • Arnica can help reduce bruising and inflammation more quickly.

4 hours post treatment

  • Maintain an upright head position for 4 hours and refrain from lying flat.
  • Do not apply makeup within 4 hours of treatment; using clean hands and brushes can lower the risk of infection.
  • Avoid applying cosmetics, lotions, or serums with excessive pressure.

24 hours post treatment

  • If the forehead area has been treated, refrain from wearing hats, headbands, sweatbands, etc., or using a Clarisonic Brush to prevent the migration of the product.
  • Avoid exercise for 24 hours.
  • Steer clear of hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, tanning beds, and working out for 24 hours.
  • Do not vigorously wash, scrub, or rub the treatment area, including facials, massages, Clarisonic face brushes, facial waxing, and exfoliating scrubs, for the specified time.

Tips for your next visit:

Research indicates that taking a daily dose of 50mg Zinc Citrate for four days leading up to and on the day of treatment might extend the duration of Botox/Dysport effects by up to 30%.

Avoid the following medications and supplements that thin the blood:

  • Aspirin/NSAIDs (such as Ibuprofen), Fish oil/Omega-3's, Alcohol, Vitamin E, Ginseng/Ginger/Garlic
  • Prior to scheduling your injectables appointment, please consult your doctor if you are taking aspirin or blood thinners.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, please contact our office for a prescription before your appointment.

When to see a doctor

After receiving Botox, it's common to experience redness, tenderness, and swelling, which typically subside within a day.

Bruising is also frequent and can be alleviated by applying an ice pack. The bruising should resolve within about two weeks.

However, seek medical assistance if you notice any of the following effects:

  • muscle weakness
  • vision changes
  • trouble swallowing
  • difficulty speaking
  • difficulty breathing

These side effects are rare, but they need immediate medical attention.
